Mexico City: At least 10 people have been killed and a further 32 injured after a bus crashed in eastern Mexico, authorities in the state of Veracruz said on Thursday.

The accident happened on Christmas Eve in the town of Zontecomatlán as the bus was travelling from Mexico City to the village of Chicontepec.

In a statement, the Zontecomatlán mayor’s office confirmed that the victims included nine adults and one child. Local officials also published a list of the injured passengers and the hospitals where they were receiving treatment.

Serious road accidents are common in Mexico, frequently involving buses or lorries, and are often linked to speeding or mechanical failure.

A similar incident in late November claimed the lives of 10 people and left 20 others injured in the western state of Michoacán.
