Kathmandu: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote region of Nepal near Mount Everest early Tuesday, sending strong tremors through the capital, Kathmandu.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was located 93 kilometers (57 miles) from Lobuche in Nepal, along the mountainous border with Tibet in China.

Buildings shook in Kathmandu, more than 200 kilometers to the southeast. The quake struck in China's Tibet region at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles), the agency said.

The tremors were also felt in parts of northern India.  A Bihar local, Dinesh Kumar Singh said, "Suddenly the chair and fan started shaking; I ran outside knowing its earthquake, then saw everyone rushing towards the road..."

While there have been no immediate reports of widespread damage or casualties, more details are awaited.
