Tragedy strikes Mexico: 3 dead, 14 injured in mass shooting at Young Park

Las Cruces: At least three people have been killed and 14 others injured in a mass shooting at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, police confirmed on Saturday.

Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any videos or information to aid in the search for the suspect or suspects involved in the attack, which took place at around 10 pm on Friday at the park, a popular music and recreation venue.

The victims were taken to various local hospitals, including the University Medical Center of El Paso, the regional trauma centre. Six individuals were transported to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces by ambulance and private vehicles, with five of them later being transferred to El Paso for further treatment.

In a post on Instagram, Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo expressed her grief, saying: "Part of me wanted to write that this is something you never really think is going to happen in your city, but that actually feels deeply untrue. Honestly, nowadays, a tragedy like this feels like a nightmare just waiting to come true at any possible moment, yet also always praying and hoping it never will."

Las Cruces, located on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert along the Rio Grande River, sits around 41 miles (66 kilometres) north of the US-Mexico border.

The Las Cruces Police Department, along with New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are investigating the incident. Police have cordoned off the area around the park, and traffic in the vicinity remains restricted as of Saturday.
