Washington: FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a USD 250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic magazine on Monday. He has alleged that an article referring to his purported excessive drinking was false and amounted to a "malicious hit piece."

The lawsuit was filed in a district court in Washington. Patel has also named author Sarah Fitzpatrick as a defendant in the case.

In the filing, Patel has denied the allegations concerning his behaviour and criticised the magazine for relying on anonymous sources.

The lawsuit stated: "Defendants cannot evade responsibility for their malicious lies by hiding behind sham sources."

Atlantic stands by reporting

The Atlantic has responded by saying it stands by its reporting. It has also said it will vigorously defend itself against what it described as a "meritless lawsuit."

The magazine has maintained its position following the legal action filed by Patel.

Article allegations and legal claims

The contested article was published on the magazine’s website on Friday. Author Sarah Fitzpatrick wrote that Patel is deeply concerned about losing his job, stating that "he has good reasons to think so - including some having to do with what witnesses described to me as bouts of excessive drinking."

The article, titled “The FBI Director Is MIA” in its online version, reported that during Patel’s tenure, the FBI had to reschedule early meetings “as a result of his alcohol-fueled nights” and that Patel “is often away or unreachable, delaying time-sensitive decisions needed to advance investigations.”

The article further said that Patel’s behaviour, including "both conspicuous inebriation and unexplained absences," had alarmed officials at the FBI and the Department of Justice.

Fitzpatrick has stated she interviewed more than two dozen people for the article and granted them anonymity to "discuss sensitive information and private conversations."

Kash Patel’s background and Indian-origin connection

Kash Patel is the first person of Indian origin to lead the FBI. Born in New York to Gujarati parents, his family roots trace back to India, though he grew up in East Africa. Patel proudly carries his heritage into his public life. During his Senate confirmation, he showed deep respect for his culture by touching his parents’ feet, a traditional Hindu gesture. He also greeted them with the words "Jai Shri Krishna" in front of lawmakers. This historic appointment highlights his journey from a Gujarati household to the top of American law enforcement.
