Elite privilege exposed: Iran’s top official faces backlash over daughter’s hijab-free wedding

The footage, which surfaced on social media platform X, shows Shamkhani walking his daughter down the aisle during her 2024 wedding ceremony at the opulent Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran.

In the video, Fatemeh is seen in a strapless white dress with a low neckline and a sheer veil, a style considered highly immodest under Iran’s strict Islamic laws. Guests cheer as Shamkhani escorts his daughter into the lavishly decorated hall. The Western-style ceremony has drawn sharp criticism on Iranian social media, where users condemned the apparent double standards between the elite and ordinary citizens.
Who is Ali Shamkhani?
Ali Shamkhani is a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. He has long been a central figure in enforcing the country’s hijab and modesty laws, including the brutal crackdown on the 2022 nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman detained for allegedly violating dress codes.
During those protests, hundreds of women were beaten, detained, or killed for defying compulsory hijab rules. Once hailed as a hardliner upholding “Islamic values,” Shamkhani is now facing accusations of blatant hypocrisy for allowing his daughter freedoms denied to millions of Iranian women.
In the video, Admiral Shamkhani, a member of Iran’s Expediency Council, is seen escorting his daughter into the Espinas Palace Hotel. Fatemeh’s attire, a low-cut, strapless dress with a nearly transparent veil barely covering her head, has become the centre of a growing debate about double standards and elite privilege in Iran.
