At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying 32 Indians and four crew members capsized near Vietnam's Phu Quoc island, with rough sea conditions believed to have caused the accident.

What happened near Vietnam's Phu Quoc island?

A tourist speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members overturned near May Rut Ngoai Islet, off Vietnam's popular holiday destination of Phu Quoc, on Saturday morning.

The vessel was reportedly travelling back towards An Thoi Port when it capsized around 400 metres from the shore, throwing everyone onboard into the sea.

Authorities confirmed that 15 Indian tourists lost their lives, while 21 people survived. Several of the rescued passengers required emergency medical treatment, with two initially reported in critical condition.

What caused the boat to capsize?

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by strong winds and rough sea conditions, which generated powerful waves around the island.

Vietnamese officials said there was no rainfall at the time and other tourist boats continued operating in the area, suggesting the sudden wave conditions may have affected only certain routes.

Investigators are continuing to examine whether operational or safety factors also contributed to the accident.

Rescue operation launched within minutes

The accident triggered an immediate rescue operation involving:

  • Vietnam Coast Guard
  • Local marine police
  • Tourist boats operating nearby
  • Emergency medical teams

According to rescue personnel, nearby boats reached the capsized vessel within minutes after receiving distress calls.

However, several passengers were reportedly trapped inside the overturned speedboat, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that emergency control rooms were activated in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Embassy officials worked with Vietnamese authorities to:

  • Verify passenger identities
  • Assist rescue efforts
  • Contact families in India
  • Coordinate documentation and consular support

The embassy also released emergency helpline numbers for relatives seeking information.

PM Modi expresses condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

He said Indian diplomatic missions in Vietnam were providing every possible assistance while remaining in constant contact with Vietnamese authorities.

According to the Indian Embassy, the 15 victims were from:

  • Tamil Nadu – 10
  • Andhra Pradesh – 3
  • Kerala – 2

The embassy later released the names of all those who died after receiving official confirmation from Vietnamese authorities.

Lava incentive trip caught in tragedy

Officials confirmed the tourists were part of an incentive tour organised by Indian smartphone company Lava.

More than 100 Lava channel partners, employees and accompanying family members had travelled to Vietnam for the company event.

Following the accident, Lava said it was working closely with the Indian Embassy and local authorities while extending support to affected families.

Following confirmation of the casualties:

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay directed officials to assist affected families.
  • Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy instructed state authorities to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy.
  • Telangana also established a dedicated control room for relatives seeking assistance.

Why Phu Quoc is a popular tourist destination

Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, attracts millions of international visitors every year because of its:

  • White sand beaches
  • Crystal-clear waters
  • Coral reefs
  • Island-hopping tours
  • Water sports and diving

Most visitors travel between nearby islands using high-speed tourist boats like the one involved in Saturday's accident.

Vietnam has witnessed similar boating tragedies

Vietnam has experienced several fatal boating accidents over the years, often linked to:

Sudden weather changes, strong sea currents, flooding, poor visibility, vessel safety concerns etc.

In another major incident last year, dozens of tourists were killed after a sightseeing boat capsized in Ha Long Bay during severe weather.

Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the Phu Quoc accident to determine whether additional safety measures are needed for tourist boat operations.
