Fifteen Indian tourists were killed after a tourist speedboat capsized near Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, according to Vietnamese state media.

The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, a popular tourist spot near Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam.

According to local authorities, 21 people were rescued, while all 15 victims were recovered from the water. Those injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Eyewitnesses told local media that nearby boats rushed to the scene to pull passengers from the sea before border guards, the navy, coast guard and other rescue agencies joined the rescue operation.

Rescue efforts were reportedly hampered by rough waves, with several passengers trapped inside the overturned vessel.

The cause of the accident remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched.
