Indian students, who make up nearly 40% of Canada’s international student population, have seen their future plans thrown into uncertainty. Many Indian students in Canada have long viewed their educational journey as a pathway to permanent residency, only to face unexpected challenges. For instance, provinces like Prince Edward Island have reduced their immigration slots by 25%, leaving students who have invested years and significant financial resources vulnerable to deportation. The cap on post-graduate work permits further exacerbates the situation, cutting off a crucial step toward securing permanent residency.

Economic and Mental Strain Relief

Beyond the diplomatic tensions, the broader impact extends to thousands of students and temporary workers who feel caught between an immigration system in flux and an economy hit by a tech industry meltdown. Many students are forced into odd jobs just to stay afloat, with their hopes of transitioning into the Canadian workforce growing dimmer. Maintaining legal status while battling economic challenges has created immense mental stress for these students. The fear of returning to India after spending family savings or taking out bank loans weighs heavily on them and their families.

Strained Immigration Processes

The immigration crisis between Canada and India is also affecting thousands of Indians on temporary visas, including students and individuals awaiting permanent residency status. The strained diplomatic relations are creating uncertainty around visa renewals, work permits, and residency applications. Visa processing times in Canada have seen significant increases in 2024, particularly for Indian nationals, due to a combination of factors such as increased application volume, heightened scrutiny, and strained diplomatic relations.

    •    Visitor Visas: The processing time for Indian nationals has increased to 114 days (nearly four months) as of October 2024

    •    Work Permits: Processing time for work permits has also surged, now taking approximately 28 weeks (about seven months)

    •    Study Permits: Indian students are experiencing an average processing time of around 6-7 weeks for study permits.

The overall delays are exacerbated by additional security checks, scrutiny of applications, and the sheer volume of applications from India, which is one of Canada’s largest sources of immigrants processing times.

A more humane approach is needed from both governments—one that prioritizes the well-being of these students and workers, many of whom have already integrated into Canadian society. The mental and financial toll on them and their families requires immediate and thoughtful action, as lives and futures are being placed in jeopardy.
