China to witness humans and robots race together in unique marathon event

In April 2025, Beijing's Daxing district will host a groundbreaking event: the first humanoid robot half-marathon. This unique race will feature humanoid robots competing alongside human runners, with over 12,000 participants expected. Robots from more than 20 companies worldwide will also take part, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of robotics.
The humanoid robots entering the race must meet strict criteria. They must resemble humans and be able to walk or run, with no wheels permitted. The robots must stand between 0.5 and 2 meters tall, with a minimum hip-to-foot distance of 0.45 meters. Both remote-controlled and fully autonomous robots are eligible to participate, and they can have their batteries replaced during the race to ensure they continue moving throughout the competition.
The event has garnered attention from companies, research institutes, universities, and robotics clubs across the globe. Organised by E-Town, a state-level industrial zone in Beijing known for its focus on high-tech industries such as aviation manufacturing and semiconductors, the event offers a platform for international collaboration in robotics and AI development.
This half-marathon follows last year’s smaller event, in which a humanoid robot from Chinese company Galbot made a brief sprint towards the finish line. While the event was modest, it marked an important first step toward integrating humanoid robots into society.
China’s Ambition to Lead in AI and Robotics
Beyond the competition, the event serves a broader purpose: showcasing China’s ambitions to lead in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. The race highlights China’s efforts to solidify its position in the global tech race, particularly in comparison with the United States. Additionally, it responds to China's demographic challenges, such as an ageing population and a shrinking workforce.
