New Jersey: A 24-year-old woman from India, identified as Simran Simran, has mysteriously gone missing just days after she landed in the United States for an arranged marriage, according to authorities in New Jersey.

Simran arrived in the country on June 20 and was last seen on Wednesday, captured by surveillance cameras looking at her phone and appearing to wait for someone. Police said she did not seem to be in distress at the time.

Investigators noted it remains unclear if Simran truly intended to go through with the marriage or if she used the opportunity for a free trip to America. She was last seen wearing grey sweatpants, a white T-shirt, black flip-flops, and small diamond-studded earrings.

Simran, who does not speak English and has no known relatives in the US, carries an international phone that functions only on Wi-Fi. Efforts to contact family members in India have so far been unsuccessful. Described as 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing around 150 pounds, she also has a small scar on the left side of her forehead.

“At this time, there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain her possible whereabouts,” Lindenwold police said in a statement on Thursday, adding that foul play has not yet been ruled out.

The case comes on the heels of another high-profile disappearance earlier this year, when 20-year-old Indian student Sudiksha Konanki vanished while on a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic.
