Berlin: A collision between a passenger bus and a train locomotive in an industrial district of Hamburg left one person dead and nine others injured on Friday, according to the city's fire service.

A fire service spokesperson told AFP that all casualties were occupants of the bus at the time of the crash.

The bus driver remains in "life-threatening" condition, while two additional passengers suffered serious injuries. Six others sustained minor injuries, officials said. In total, five individuals were transported to local hospitals for medical care.

The driver was "the last who was freed as he was stuck" within the mangled remains of the vehicle, the spokesperson said.

The incident occurred at an open-level crossing in the port city's industrial sector. In a formal statement, police noted that "the cause of the crash is not yet clear."

Authorities confirmed that the individual who died "succumbed to their injuries at the scene."

Criminal investigators have been deployed to the site alongside emergency responders to assist in determining the circumstances of the collision.
