The United States, under President Donald Trump, has announced a 25% import tariff on Indian goods, along with an additional, unspecified penalty linked to India’s energy and defence ties with Russia. The new tariff will come into effect from August 1, 2025. The move rattled global markets, leading to a sharp downturn.

Soon after, a message started circulating online claiming that Trump had harshly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was shared as a screenshot of a post supposedly written by Trump himself. However, a Mathrubhumi fact-check found this claim to be misleading.

What we found

We ran a reverse image search on the viral post and found that it had been shared widely across multiple platforms. We also checked Donald Trump’s official Truth Social account but found no such post. In addition, no credible news outlet has reported that Trump made such remarks about Prime Minister Modi.

Interestingly, the viral image carries a watermark ‘SATIRE’ across the middle and ‘Wokeflix’ at the top suggesting that it was likely created for satirical or mocking purposes.

Based on the available information, a keyword search was conducted. It was found that the same post was shared on the ‘Wokeflix’ account on the social media platform X.A review of the account showed several similar posts, and its bio clearly states that it is dedicated to publishing satirical content.

Fact: The claim going around is fake. Donald Trump did not post such remarks about Modi on his Truth Social account. The image originated from the X account Wokeflix, which regularly shares satirical content, but it is now being wrongly shared as if it were real.
