How a thief stole $4400 Gucci bag from Trump's top security chief right under Secret Service’s nose!

A masked thief who stole a $4,400 Gucci handbag belonging to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem has been apprehended, according to a report by The New York Times. The theft took place on April 20 at The Capital Burger, located just a mile from the White House, while Noem, 53, was having Easter dinner with her family.

Surveillance footage reviewed by law enforcement shows the suspect entering the restaurant around 7:52 pm, dressed in dark pants, a black jacket with a fur collar, a baseball cap, and a surgical mask. The thief quickly scanned the room before targeting Noem's bag, which was placed by her feet. Noem later recounted the moment on a podcast with Vince Coglianese, saying, "It was kind of shocking, actually, because it was sitting right by my feet. I actually felt my purse — he hooked with his foot and drug it a few steps away and dropped a coat over it and took it." She initially mistook the movement for her grandchildren kicking her under the table, but quickly realised the seriousness of the situation. "But it was very professionally done," she added. "It tells me that this happens all the time to people, and that they live in communities where this is a danger, and it reaffirms why I’m here."

CNN's chief law enforcement analyst, John Miller, characterised the thief as a "smooth operator" who likely specialises in such crimes. Miller stated, "He does this for a living, there's no doubt about that." He explained that the thief, after sitting at a table near Noem, used his foot to slide the handbag beneath his own table, covered it with a jacket, and exited the restaurant with it, all in a matter of three minutes.

Authorities have linked the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, to an organised East Coast gang known for high-end thefts. Sources told The New York Times that at least two people were involved in the robbery, with one of the suspects believed to be a migrant. The second suspect remains at large, while the arrested individual is set to appear in court early next week. Despite Noem's security detail, including plainclothes Secret Service agents stationed between her table and the entrance, questions have been raised regarding how the theft occurred so close to her protection.

Miller suggested that Noem's visibly expensive handbag may have been a key factor in the theft. "Based on my experience, if I am a professional pickpocket and bag swiper... when I see a $4,400 Gucci bag... that's what's going to make it targeted," he said. Despite Noem's position and her Secret Service detail, Miller noted, "If I think this is a cabinet-level person with Secret Service people around and watching her, that's going to make me walk away. I think what drew him to that table was the bag."

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the crime was an opportunistic act or specifically targeted due to Noem's prominent role. The incident is part of a growing trend of organised thefts targeting affluent individuals along the East Coast.
