Charlie Kirk shooting: Suspect held ‘leftist ideology,’ says Utah Governor

Salt Lake City: Utah Governor Spencer Cox on Sunday confirmed that Tyler Robinson, the man arrested in connection with the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, was romantically involved with a transgender roommate and espoused “leftist ideology.”

“Yes, I can confirm that,” Cox said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, when asked about reports surrounding the suspect’s personal life. “The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to a female,” he added.

Cox emphasized that the transgender partner had no involvement in the crime and was fully cooperating with law enforcement. “This partner has been incredibly cooperative, had no idea that this was happening, and is working with investigators right now,” Cox said.

Tyler Robinson, 22, is expected to face formal charges on Tuesday. While the motive remains under investigation, the governor acknowledged that investigators are examining whether gender identity or personal relationships may have influenced the killing.

“Again, all of these things — we're trying to figure out,” Cox told CNN.

Governor: Suspect held “Leftist Ideology”

Speaking later on NBC’s Meet the Press, Cox said, “There clearly was a leftist ideology with this — with this assassin.” He explained that this was based on information gathered from the suspect’s family members and friends.

Robinson has reportedly not been cooperating with authorities.

The revelation has further inflamed already polarized national discourse, especially among far-right circles. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer called for the transgender movement to be labeled a “terrorist movement,” and Elon Musk shared and amplified multiple posts targeting gender-affirming care and progressive ideologies.

On Saturday, Musk went further, telling a crowd at a far-right event in London, “The left is the party of murder.”

Kirk’s record and the political fallout

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a vocal critic of transgender rights, was fatally shot on Wednesday during a speaking event on a Utah university campus. His rhetoric — often controversial — included repeated attacks on gender identity.

In one widely shared 2023 video, Kirk told a church audience that transgender identity was “a throbbing middle finger to God.” Following a deadly school shooting last year carried out by a suspect reportedly identifying as transgender, Kirk posted about what he called a “trans delusion death cult.”

While speculation mounts over political motives, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg urged caution in assigning blame. “There’s not a consistent pattern of left versus right among the shooters,” Buttigieg said on Meet the Press, pointing out that Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in June in another politically charged act of violence.

“We have to reject anyone who would try to exploit political violence,” Buttigieg added. “The response to this cannot be for the government to crack down on individuals or groups because they challenge the government politically.”

Turning Point USA has announced a memorial for Kirk to be held September 21 in a football stadium near Phoenix, Arizona. Former President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, confirmed he will attend.

As the investigation unfolds, Governor Cox renewed his call for political restraint, comparing the impact of social media algorithms to the opioid epidemic. “They’re as addictive and deadly as fentanyl,” he warned.
