Why were Andrew and Tristan Tate arrested? UK extradition request explained

Miami: Social media influencers Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate were arrested by federal authorities in Miami on Saturday after British prosecutors sought their extradition over rape and human trafficking charges.
The brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, were taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service on a sealed warrant, according to agency spokesperson Brady McCarron.
Their arrest marks the latest development in a long-running international legal battle spanning Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States.
UK seeks extradition
British prosecutors announced they are seeking the extradition of the Tate brothers over allegations that they raped and trafficked women between 2010 and 2017.
According to the U.K.'s Crown Prosecution Service, the brothers face a total of 38 new charges involving four additional alleged victims, alongside charges that were publicly announced in 2025 involving three women.
Both Andrew and Tristan Tate face allegations of rape and human trafficking.
Andrew Tate also faces an additional charge of profiting from prostitution, along with 19 further charges relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography, according to British authorities. The brothers have denied all allegations.
Arrest follows Romanian investigation
Andrew and Tristan Tate moved to Romania in 2016 and were arrested there in 2022 as part of an investigation into alleged human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Although they denied wrongdoing, the Romanian criminal case has not proceeded because of legal and procedural issues.
Last year, Romanian authorities allowed the brothers to leave the country, and they flew to Florida aboard a private jet.
They are expected to appear in federal court in Miami early next week.
Lawyer rejects allegations
Joseph McBride, a lawyer representing the Tate brothers, criticised the latest case brought by British authorities.
"They're pulling out all the stops to make sure these guys never get their day in court."
He also said, "We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain's political dirty work."
Social media influence and controversy
Andrew Tate, 39, first gained public attention as a contestant on the British reality show Big Brother in 2016 before building a massive online following promoting wealth, masculinity and luxury lifestyles.
He has more than 10 million followers on X, although he has previously been banned from platforms including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for violating hate speech policies.
His online content has drawn widespread criticism for comments about women, sexual assault and mental health.
The Tate brothers have consistently maintained that they are innocent, arguing that their controversial remarks have been taken out of context or were intended as jokes.
