In a dramatic turn of events surrounding the Sona Comstar Annual General Meeting (AGM), Rani Kapur — mother of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur — has written to the company's Board and shareholders seeking a deferment of the AGM scheduled for Friday, July 25.

In her letter, Rani Kapur expressed deep anguish over the sudden and suspicious death of her son, alleging coercion, misuse of documents, and an attempt to usurp the family legacy. She requested that the AGM be postponed by at least two weeks, citing an ongoing period of mourning and unresolved questions surrounding Sunjay’s death.

Sunjay Kapur, 53, died on June 12 in England reportedly after suffering a heart attack triggered by accidentally swallowing a bee while playing polo. His unexpected death has since sparked growing concerns within the Kapur family.

“Rani Kapur is the head of the Kapur family and the Sona group. While she is still recovering from the loss of her only son, she has been left deeply disturbed by recent developments,” said her legal counsel Vaibhav Gaggar. “She has not only questioned how the death occurred but also raised red flags about the company’s actions in the aftermath.”

In the letter addressed to shareholders, Rani Kapur stated that she was made to sign documents while in a fragile state of grief — without explanation and without ever being informed of their contents. She also alleged being denied access to critical financial documents and accounts, despite being the sole beneficiary of her late husband’s estate and a majority shareholder in the Sona Group.

“She has her apprehensions — not just about her son’s death, which did not appear natural to her — but also about what followed immediately after. She deserves clarity and time,” Gaggar said, emphasizing that the AGM should not go forward under these circumstances.

Rani Kapur has called for transparency, accountability, and respect for the family’s mourning period before any major corporate decisions are made.
