Utah stabbing: Indian consulate says it is in touch with victim's family

Washington: The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has expressed concern over the stabbing of an Indian national in the US state of Utah, saying it is in touch with the victim's family and local authorities while offering all possible assistance.
The victim, identified as Syed Sohailuddin, was allegedly stabbed 15 times inside Valley City Mall in West Valley City, near Salt Lake City, on Monday after the attacker reportedly questioned him about his religion, according to US media reports.
"The Consulate is in close contact with the friends and family and stands ready to provide all possible consular assistance. We remain engaged with local authorities and will continue to monitor the matter closely," the Consulate said in a post on X.
According to Fox 13 News, Sohailuddin, who worked at the shopping mall, was attacked by Peter Michael Larsen during the afternoon. Court records cited by ABC News said Larsen later told investigators he targeted the victim because of his religious beliefs.
Larsen was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and carrying a prohibited dangerous weapon.
Sohailuddin was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds. Larsen was also hospitalised after bystanders intervened and allegedly punched him in the head to stop the attack.
The incident remains under investigation.
