Mumbai: In a step towards more effective communication, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced its decision to launch podcasts aimed at disseminating information of public interest. This move is part of the RBI's ongoing efforts to improve transparency and connect with a wider audience.

Over the years, the RBI has been continuously expanding its communication strategies to enhance transparency and better engage with the public. As part of this effort, the central bank has decided to introduce podcasts as a new tool in its communication arsenal.

Shaktikanta Das, the Governor of RBI, highlighted the growing popularity of podcasts, especially among the younger generation. He mentioned during a press conference after the monetary policy meeting, "I think podcast as an instrument of communication has become popular, particularly among the youngsters. So we at the RBI thought this was the requirement of the time. Also, I think we should be ahead of the curve. It's basically a communication tool to communicate with the wider section of the people."

Das further emphasised that podcasts would help explain important information in a simple and accessible manner, making it easier for a larger section of society to understand complex topics related to the RBI's policies and decisions.

RBI’s evolving communication strategy

The RBI has been continuously improving its public awareness campaigns, incorporating both traditional and modern communication methods. These include the use of social media to reach a wider audience and promote greater understanding of its functions and decisions. Podcasts will now be an additional tool in the RBI's effort to ensure its messages have greater impact and reach.

The RBI's communication strategy aims to explain the rationale behind its decisions, such as interest rates and monetary policies, and ensure that its messages are clearly understood by the public.

Monetary policy update

In addition to the announcement about podcasts, the RBI’s monetary policy committee decided to maintain the repo rate at 6.5 percent for the 11th consecutive time. This decision reflects the RBI's continued neutral stance on monetary policy.

The RBI also revised its GDP growth forecast for 2024-25, lowering it to 6.6 percent from the previous forecast of 7.2 percent. The Governor also announced a 50 basis points reduction in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), lowering it from 4.5 percent to 4 percent. This move is expected to infuse Rs 1.15 lakh crore of liquidity into the banking system.

Additionally, the RBI raised its retail inflation projection for 2024-25 from 4.5 percent to 4.8 percent, reflecting current economic conditions.
