# News Desk

New Delhi: In a major development for India's telecom and broadband sector, Reliance Jio has signed an agreement with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to the country.

The partnership, announced on Wedensday, comes a day after rival Bharti Airtel struck a similar deal, highlighting the growing competition in India’s satellite broadband market.

The agreement remains subject to regulatory approval, with SpaceX needing authorization to sell Starlink services in India. Once cleared, the collaboration will allow Jio and SpaceX to integrate Starlink’s satellite connectivity with Jio’s existing infrastructure, enhancing broadband access for consumers and businesses.

Retail & service expansion

Jio has outlined a comprehensive rollout plan for Starlink solutions, making them available through:

  • Jio retail outlets across India
  • Online storefronts for easy accessibility
  • In-store Starlink equipment availability
  • Dedicated installation and activation support

This strategic move is expected to boost Jio’s rural broadband coverage, utilizing Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network to offer seamless, high-speed internet in remote and underserved regions.

"Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all," said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio.

Impact on India’s digital landscape

With Jio’s position as the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic and Starlink’s status as the leading satellite broadband provider, the collaboration aims to revolutionize internet accessibility in India. Experts believe this partnership could:

  • Reduce digital divide by providing broadband to rural and remote locations
  • Enhance business and enterprise connectivity
  • Offer an alternative to traditional broadband and fibre networks
  •  Support India’s Digital India and connectivity initiatives

While final regulatory approvals are awaited, Jio’s agreement with SpaceX marks a significant shift in India’s broadband landscape, positioning satellite internet as a major player in the country’s growing digital infrastructure.
