New Delhi, Sept 22: India’s middle class has received long-awaited relief as the Modi government’s GST 2.0 reforms take effect, cutting taxes across daily essentials, vehicles, appliances, and insurance.

The sweeping overhaul, launched on the eve of Navratri, is expected to save families thousands — even lakhs — annually.

Cars and Transportation: ₹50,000–₹1.07 lakh saved

Small cars, including hatchbacks like the Maruti Alto K10, now attract just 18% GST instead of 28%, with the cess fully scrapped. On a ₹5 lakh vehicle, this means ₹40,000–₹50,000 in direct savings. Road tax and insurance premiums, tied to ex-showroom prices, also drop, adding another ₹6,000–₹7,000 in relief. For some models, total savings top ₹1.07 lakh.

Insurance: GST fully abolished

Life and health insurance premiums are now 100% GST-free, down from the earlier 18% slab. A family paying ₹20,000 annually for health cover saves ₹3,600, while a term life policy costing ₹10,000 saves ₹1,800. For many households, this adds up to ₹5,400 or more every year.

Essentials: Monthly grocery bills shrink

Toothpaste, soaps, biscuits, dairy items, and clothing under ₹2,500 have all been shifted to the 5% GST slab (down from 12–18%). With a typical family spending ₹5,000/month on essentials, households now save ₹200–₹300 monthly — or ₹3,000+ annually. Many staples like paneer, roti, khakra, and basic groceries are now completely GST-free.

Appliances and Electronics: Cheaper big-ticket buys

White goods such as refrigerators, ACs, washing machines, and large TVs have moved from 28% GST to 18%. For instance, a ₹30,000 refrigerator now costs ₹27,600, saving buyers ₹2,400. Depending on the item, savings range from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000.

The government hopes the “savings festival” unleashed by GST 2.0 will not only ease household budgets but also fuel higher consumption and stronger economic growth.
