How is gold imported into India?

India meets a significant share of its gold demand through imports, as domestic mine production is limited. Unlike China, one of the world's leading gold-producing countries, India relies heavily on overseas supplies to meet demand from jewellery manufacturers, retailers and investors.

Gold is imported through authorised channels, including banks and other entities permitted under India's import regulations. After entering the country, the metal is supplied through distributors to jewellers and retailers, who use it to manufacture jewellery, coins and other gold products.

Pure gold, or 24-carat gold, is relatively soft and is often alloyed with other metals, such as copper or silver, to improve its strength and durability for jewellery making.
Where can you buy silver in India?

Silver can be purchased in India from banks, jewellers and commodity exchanges, as well as through physical and electronic investment options. However, the cost of buying and selling silver can vary depending on the method.

Silver coins sold by banks may be more expensive because their prices include additional charges for tamper-proof packaging and assay certificates. Buying silver jewellery can also involve making charges of 10% or more. At the time of resale, melting charges of 15% or higher may further reduce the returns.

Investors can also trade silver futures on commodity exchanges. These contracts typically involve larger quantities, with the minimum contract size and delivery requirements varying by exchange and contract. Physical silver and electronic investment options offer alternatives for those looking to invest in the metal, while futures trading allows investors to take positions on silver price movements but carries additional market risks.
