Gold’s special niche in India
Gold has carved out a distinct place for itself among investment options in India. Unlike assets such as real estate and, to some extent, shares, gold is relatively easy to buy and sell, making it more accessible to people across smaller towns and cities.
Its familiarity and ease of transactions have helped make gold a popular choice among small investors. Beyond investment, gold also holds strong cultural significance in India, with many households buying and storing the precious metal for weddings and other important occasions.
This enduring demand exists irrespective of short-term movements in gold prices. Since predicting the metal’s price is difficult, market analysts often advise investors to consider buying during price dips rather than trying to time the market.
Why is silver cheaper than gold in India?
Silver has traditionally been priced lower than gold, largely because of differences in supply, demand and usage. Unlike gold, a large share of silver is used for industrial purposes, including applications that require its high electrical conductivity.
The relative abundance of silver compared with gold is another major factor behind the price gap. The balance between global supply and demand also plays a key role, with silver generally seeing lower investment demand than gold.
Like other commodities, silver prices are ultimately driven by demand and supply. When demand rises, prices tend to increase, while weaker demand can put downward pressure on the metal’s price.
