First-time filing ITR? Here’s why Form 16 is your best friend

New Delhi: If you’re a salaried employee gearing up to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) for the first time, you’ve probably heard about Form 16 — the must-have document that makes tax filing a breeze. But what exactly is Form 16, and why is it so important? Let’s break it down.
What is Form 16?
Form 16 is a certificate issued by your employer under Section 203 of the Income Tax Act. It gives a detailed summary of your annual salary and the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) during the financial year. Think of it as your official proof that tax has been deducted and deposited with the government.
What Does Form 16 Contain?
Form 16 comes in two parts:
- Part A: Includes your and your employer’s name & address, PAN & TAN numbers, amount of tax deducted, and TDS deposited.
- Part B: Gives a detailed breakup of your salary, exemptions (under Section 10), deductions (under Chapter VI-A), and your net taxable income.
Your Form 16 will reflect deductions like:
- Section 80C: Life insurance premiums, PPF, etc
- 80CCC & 80CCD: Contributions to pension funds
- 80D: Health insurance premiums
- 80E: Interest on education loans
- 80G: Donations
- 80TTA: Savings account interest
- Plus other deductions and reliefs like Section 89
Changed Jobs During the Year?
Worked at multiple places? You must collect Form 16 from each employer, as tax is deducted separately by each.
Who Gets Access To Form 16?
Only employees whose income is taxable (i.e., above the basic exemption limit) are issued Form 16. If your income is below the limit, your employer isn’t required to issue it.
