The Kerala Police has issued a public reminder about the importance of yellow box markings on roads—an often overlooked but vital traffic regulation tool designed to ease congestion at busy junctions.

These distinctive yellow grid patterns, officially classified under Box Marking BM-06 as per the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) code, are primarily found at intersections, signal-free junctions, and areas where managing traffic flow with signals is impractical.

According to the police, the yellow box system is intended to promote self-regulation among drivers. Vehicles should only enter the marked area if they are certain they can exit without stopping, thereby avoiding a traffic bottleneck in the middle of the intersection. Stopping or parking inside the yellow box is strictly prohibited and punishable under traffic rules.

“Yellow indicates high-priority zones or potential danger. These markings help maintain uninterrupted traffic flow at critical points, especially where installing traffic lights isn't feasible,” the department stated.

The police emphasised that these markings reflect not just traffic management strategies, but also the civic responsibility of road users. “Adhering to yellow box rules is a mark of a responsible and civilised society,” the post read.
