The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala on Friday (July 10), warning of isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Light to moderate rain is also likely across Kerala and Mahe from July 10 to July 14.

A trough has formed between Telangana and the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast, extending from around 1.5 km to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area persists over the northern parts of central Uttar Pradesh. The weather department said it is likely to weaken gradually over the next 24 hours.

The offshore trough extending from the Gujarat coast to the Maharashtra coast has also weakened.

Yellow alert for nine Kerala districts

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the following districts on July 10:

Pathanamthitta

Kottayam

Ernakulam

Idukki

Malappuram

Kozhikode

Wayanad

Kannur

Kasaragod

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, isolated places could receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, which falls under its heavy rainfall category. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also expected in some areas.

School, college holiday on Saturday?

As of now, no rain-related holiday has been announced for Saturday (July 11).

The weather situation remains dynamic, and IMD forecasts may be updated in the coming hours. District administrations may declare holidays for schools and colleges in areas affected by heavy rainfall, depending on local weather conditions.

It is also the second Saturday, when many schools and colleges traditionally remain closed.

Students and parents have been advised to rely only on official announcements from district collectors and educational institutions for updates on school holidays or changes to class timings.
