Kochi girl says no to job offers from Europe, invests in fish farm at Kannamaly

Kochi: Mary Jose, a 25-year-old girl here has been making heads turn with her career. Though she pursued post-graduation in Business Analytics from Manchester university in England, she feels content only when feeding the fish by rowing a boat in the fish farm at Kannamaly. She has started the fish farm here after rejecting job offers from many top companies in Europe.

"It is not necessary to work in a multi-national company if one studied abroad. A considerable income can be made from initiatives like fish farms too," said Mary with confidence.  

She is the daughter of Kadavanthra native Alangadan Jose and Anna. After completing 12th standard from Global public school in Thiruvaniyoor, she pursued graduation in Economics. 

Following her return from England, she informed her decision to start a fish farm by taking land for lease. Though her parents were shocked by her decision at the beginning, she convinced them without taking much time. 

Mary has taken one and a half acres of land for lease in Kannamaly and deposited 6000 tilapia juvenile fishes and over 150 crabs in the pond. The crabs are growing in separate boxes. By considering Mary’s interest in farming, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) scientist Dr Joselin Jose has extended support to her in the initiative. Mary works on the farm from morning 7 am to noon. After spending time at the farm, she has been working from home for a company based in Pune.
