Operation Numkhor has become the talk of Kerala — with luxury vehicles seized, celebrities under the scanner and Customs tightening its grip on alleged tax evasion networks. But what does "Numkhor" even mean?

The term ‘Numkhor’ comes from Dzongkha, the official language of Bhutan, where it translates to ‘vehicle’ or ‘automobile’. Interestingly, it also exists in Tibetan, where it can mean ‘entourage’—a group that follows or surrounds someone of importance. The name is a fitting choice for an operation targeting a network accused of smuggling high-end vehicles from Bhutan into India, often involving celebrities and luxury lifestyles funded through customs duty evasion and forged documents.

Launched by Kerala Customs, the operation targets luxury cars brought into the state using fake addresses, forged registration documents or loopholes in tax procedures. The investigation has already led to the seizure of expensive foreign-made cars, some reportedly linked to film industry personalities, influencers and businessmen.

Sources say the name "Numkhor" was chosen to symbolically reflect the lavish entourages and elite lifestyles surrounding those now under investigation — a subtle nod to the glamour meets grey-zone nature of the crackdown.

As the probe deepens, more revelations are expected in the coming days. For now, ‘Operation Numkhor’ continues to rattle the glitzy circles of Kerala. Going forward, the investigation will intensify, with both Customs and the Enforcement Directorate conducting a joint probe into the widening luxury vehicle smuggling racket.
