Pathanamthitta: A wedding in Thadiyoor took a shocking turn when the bride’s family called it off, following the groom creating a ruckus after arriving at the venue drunk.

This dramatic event took place during the wedding of a 32-year-old man and woman at a Christian church here on Monday. The groom had returned home from abroad for his wedding.

Along with the guests, the groom arrived at the church on time in a well-decorated car for the wedding ceremony. But the wedding that started as a joyous event spiralled into chaos when the groom, who was intoxicated, could not get out of the car. He was so tipsy that no matter how much everyone tried, they couldn't carry him to the church.

Things worsened when he started to abuse the priest who came to officiate the function and the people who tried to help him to get out of the car. This unexpected turn of events led to the cancellation of the wedding, and the bride's family informed the police.

Efforts were made by the Koipuram police to calm the situation, but the groom offended the police officials too. Subsequently, a case was registered against the groom for causing  public nuisance.

The situation was brought under control through police intervention. After the discussions, the groom’s family agreed to pay a compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the bride’s family.
