Hope rises as 237 homes near completion for Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslide-affected families

Kalpetta: Construction of the township being developed at Elston Estate for families affected by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslide is progressing steadily, with structural work completed on 237 houses.
The township is being built across five zones, with the preparation of plots completed for a total of 350 houses. Around 1,500 workers are engaged in construction activities round the clock to ensure the timely completion of the project.
As part of infrastructure development, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has relocated existing distribution lines passing through the township. In addition, four major towers for a 110 kV power transmission line have been installed at the Elston site.
Road works and core infrastructure take shape
Road construction within the township is also progressing rapidly and is being carried out in three phases. The main road, measuring 12.65 metres in width, will extend over 1,100 metres. Another key road, 9.5 metres wide, will run for 2.770 kilometres, connecting various zones within the township.
Internal roads, each 5.8 metres wide, are being constructed over a total length of 7.553 kilometres, providing access to residential areas. So far, 490 metres of the main road and 906 metres of the second-phase road have been completed.
Electrical ducting and side drainage works are currently underway along the main road. In total, the township will have 11.423 kilometres of roads once construction is completed.
Utilities and water facilities underway
Construction is also in progress on essential facilities, including a drinking water storage tank with a capacity of 9 lakh litres, a sewage treatment plant, and an integrated drainage system at the Elston site.
Once completed, the Mundakkai–Chooralmala township is expected to provide safe, well-planned housing and modern infrastructure for disaster-affected families.
