Priyanka shines in Wayanad, secures debut victory with over 4 lakh margin

Wayanad: In a high-stakes bypoll, Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured a resounding victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, reaffirming the UDF’s dominance in its stronghold. Priyanka, making her electoral debut, triumphed with an impressive margin of over 4 lakh votes, overcoming concerns about the notably low voter turnout of around 65%. This win not only underscores her appeal, but also consolidates the Congress's position in Kerala. Priyanka received over 5.5 votes in the constituency.
Interestingly, her lead crossed the lead of her brother Rahul Gandhi in the last general elections held in April, 2024. He had secured a lead of 3,64,422 votes. The bypoll was necessitated when her brother Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat five months ago to retain Rae Bareli. Despite apprehensions about the turnout, with over 5 lakh voters staying away compared to previous elections, Priyanka’s focused campaign and the UDF's robust groundwork helped secure a decisive win.
UDF’s historic stronghold remains unshaken
Since its creation in 2009, Wayanad has been a UDF bastion, with Congress leader M I Shanavas inaugurating the legacy through a victory margin of 1,54,000 votes. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi set a record by winning the seat with a historic majority of 4,31,770 votes, turning national attention to the constituency. Priyanka’s massive win has now raised the bar even higher, further cementing the constituency as a UDF fortress.
Campaign strategies and key Issues
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s campaign struck a chord with Wayanad’s electorate by addressing pressing local issues, including human-wildlife conflict, infrastructure gaps and socio-economic concerns. Her personal outreach, symbolised by her visits to victims of elephant attacks and her rallying cry of "You are my family”, resonated strongly across rural and urban voters alike.
The UDF campaign also gained momentum through high-profile support from leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and regional stalwarts such as D K Shivakumar and Sachin Pilot. The team highlighted Congress's commitment to Wayanad's development, contrasting it with the alleged neglect during the LDF's tenure.
LDF and NDA fall short
Despite spirited campaigns, both the LDF and NDA struggled to make significant inroads into UDF-dominated territories. LDF candidate Sathyan Mokeri of CPI banked on his advocacy for farmers and local appeal. However, his focus on past grievances failed to counter Priyanka's fresh and inclusive approach. He could garner around 2 lakh votes from the constituency.
The NDA, represented by BJP candidate Navya Haridas, targeted Christian voters and sought to expand its base. However, limited resonance with the electorate and a lack of impactful issues led to a subdued performance. She got over 1 lakh votes from the constituency.
Impact of voter turnout
While the voter turnout of around 65% was a decline from the 74% in April, 2024 and the 80% seen in 2019, Priyanka's commanding lead showcased her ability to mobilise voters effectively. The Congress campaign's targeted efforts in Nilambur, Wandoor and Sultan Bathery—UDF bastions—ensured the party maintained its edge despite reduced participation.
A win with national implications
Priyanka Gandhi’s emphatic victory in Wayanad not only secures a crucial seat for the Congress, but also marks a significant milestone in her political journey. It sends a strong message about the UDF's enduring influence in Kerala and the Gandhi family's continued appeal in key constituencies.
As the Congress celebrates this landmark win, the focus now shifts to ensuring the promises made during the campaign translate into tangible development for Wayanad, further solidifying the party’s bond with the region.
