The signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres by Arsenal FC has sparked excitement far beyond North London — all the way to Kerala, where passionate fans have made their own mark in welcoming the club’s newest No.14.

In a lively tribute, the Arsenal Kerala Supporters Club (AKSC) released a short video celebrating Gyökeres’ arrival from Sporting CP. The video, shared on social media on July 29, features over 100 fans, including children, youth, and elders, all proudly wearing Arsenal jerseys and performing the striker’s trademark ‘mask’ goal celebration.

A creative show of support from Arsenal Kerala

The video montage, stitched together from clips sent by supporters from across Kerala and even outside the State, captures the celebratory mood among the Gooners. Each participant is seen imitating Gyökeres’ well-known goal celebration by interlocking their fingers over their mouths — a gesture inspired by the character Bane from The Dark Knight Rises.

Set in varied backdrops, from playgrounds to living rooms, the video reflects the widespread support for Arsenal in the region. The Premier League India social media account also took notice, responding with an image of Gyökeres in his new jersey, returning the favour with the same celebration.

Why the ‘mask’ matters

Gyökeres’ ‘mask’ gesture has become one of the most recognisable celebrations in modern football. Though the striker has never fully explained its meaning, the phrase associated with it — “Nobody cared until I put on the mask” — has resonated deeply with fans. It has now become symbolic of Gyökeres’ identity on the pitch and a point of connection for supporters worldwide.

Arsenal fans look ahead with hope

Arsenal’s signing of Gyökeres, reportedly for a fee up to €73 million, marks a strong intent ahead of the new Premier League season. The 26-year-old arrives after a sensational year at Sporting CP, scoring 54 goals in 52 matches. He has signed a five-year contract and will wear the legendary No.14 shirt once worn by club legend Thierry Henry.

Gyökeres is Arsenal’s sixth signing of the transfer window, joining Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Nørgaard, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke. After narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in the past two seasons, fans are hopeful that the Swedish forward’s arrival could turn the tide.
