Waste-free Kerala project: Camera-driven crackdown on violations soon

Thiruvananthapuram: The Local Self Government Department is introducing more projects for sound waste management. Measures being taken include installing cameras to catch people who dump waste in public areas and creating waste collection centres inwards. 

The project of installing cameras is expected to be completed by December with the help of local self-bodies. Visuals of law violations captured in cameras installed by private parties will also be collected and defaulters prosecuted.

The second phase of the intensive programme with the aim of a ‘waste-free new Kerala’ (Malinjya vimukta navakeralam) will be launched on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. 

It is now mandatory to have small collection centres in educational institutions, hospitals, and similar establishments excluding Anganwadis. 

By November, degradable and non-biodegradable bins will be installed in cities and all the major roads at a distance of 500 meters. In this manner, the state hopes to manage the waste disposal problem that has become a major issue in cities and towns alike.
