‘Will stand by my father’s ideals and party’s stance’: VS’s family on accepting Padma Vibhushan

Seven months after the death of V.S. Achuthanandan, one of India’s most prominent communist leaders and a former chief minister of Kerala, the decision to posthumously confer the Padma Vibhushan has led to a multitude of discussions.
Achuthanandan, a veteran CPM leader and freedom fighter, passed away on July 21, 2025. For decades, he was a towering presence in Kerala’s political life, widely regarded as a symbol of integrity, austerity and unwavering commitment to public causes.
The announcement of India’s second-highest civilian honour was initially acknowledged by his son, V.A. Arun Kumar, as recognition of his father’s lifelong contribution to public service and administration.
However, in a Facebook post on Thursday, Arun Kumar said, “The love and respect shown by the people towards V.S., who stood alongside Kerala’s society for decades through people’s struggles and unwavering political positions, have always been a great source of strength for us. We view this award as an expression of respect for his public life.
“However, the movement he represented has a clear political position regarding the acceptance of such official honours. As a communist, he always firmly upheld those values and party decisions. The family’s decision in this matter will stand by my father’s ideals and the party’s stance.”
He added that the place V.S. holds in the hearts of the people is greater than any award and expressed gratitude for the affection shown to him.
Speaking to the media, Arun Kumar said the family’s decision on whether to accept the honour would align with the CPM’s stance on the matter and proceed accordingly.
