Kanhangad: The price of drumsticks and 'Kanthari' chilli, also known as bird's eye chilli, have recently surged to Rs. 500 per kg in the local vegetable market, surprising many buyers.

This price hike followed a decrease in the supply of cheaper drumsticks from Tamil Nadu, which were priced between Rs. 200 and Rs. 300. In their place, a more expensive variety from North India, known as the 'Baroda drumstick', has entered the market. This variety is longer (about half a meter) and greener than the Tamil Nadu variety.

Since drumsticks are an essential ingredient for sadya and celebrations, wholesalers are stocking them, although in limited quantities. Traders believe the price may change once local drumsticks start entering the market.

Kanthari price up

In addition to drumsticks, the price of Kanthari chilli has also risen sharply. The price, which was Rs. 300 per kg, had already crossed Rs. 400 and is now at Rs. 500 due to a reduction in supply.

The price of plantains (Nendranpazham) has also increased recently because of reduced supply. In just two days, the price of plantains, which was Rs. 45-50 per kg, has jumped to Rs. 70-80. Similarly, the price of green plantains has gone up from Rs. 35 to Rs. 50. The price hike is because of the halt in banana supplies from neighbouring states and a decrease in the availability of local bananas.

In contrast, the price of Njalipoovan pazham (Indian apple banana), which was Rs. 100 two months ago, has now dropped to Rs. 60. Meanwhile, poovan pazham (small banana) is available for Rs. 45.
