Kannur: A woman police officer has claimed that the investigation team recorded a completely fake statement in her name regarding a high-profile protest against former Health Minister Veena George during last LDF regime. Sub-Inspector Deepti, who managed the minister's security at Kannur Railway Station during the incident, informed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that she had never submitted any statement. She said that the team fabricated a record claiming George was hit and knocked down during the scuffle. However, video footage from the station clearly shows Officer Deepti standing directly in front of the former minister and accompanying her throughout her time at the platform.

Woman officer denies giving statement to investigators

The SIT constituted over the case after the UDF government came into power is now probing who instructed officers to register severe, non-bailable charges against the student protesters. Reports on recent inquiries at George’s residence in Kodumon, Pathanamthitta, suggest that the former minister herself admitted to the SIT that no murder attempt took place. Furthermore, two other police officers present at the railway station said that they did not see anyone hit or assault the minister. These developments follow earlier admissions by the minister's former gunman, Abhilash, who confessed to lying about the presence of weapons on the direct orders of George.

Former gunman admits lying on minister's instructions

The controversy stems from a black-flag demonstration on 25 February 2026 at Kannur Railway Station. Five Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists—M.C. Atul, V.V. Akshay, Bithul Balan, C.H. Mubas, and Ahammad Yasin—approached George to protest against alleged medical negligence. Following the demonstration, George complained of neck pain and was admitted to a hospital. Based on a complaint filed by her gunman, the Railway Police registered an attempt-to-murder case alleging that five activists jumped at her with weapons while shouting "Kolleda" (kill). The five student leaders were subsequently arrested and spent 16 days in Kannur Sub Jail before obtaining bail.

Health minister criticises predecessor over false charges

Current Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan confirmed that gunman Abhilash faces strict disciplinary action for making false statements. Speaking to reporters, Muraleedharan expressed surprise that anyone would react so fearfully to a peaceful black-flag demonstration.

"The gunman has claimed his statement was given as directed by the then minister. It is highly irresponsible. This is what happens when people with no connection to politics enter the political field and suddenly become a minister," Muraleedharan said.

He added: "As a result, the gunman has become a culprit now. He will of course face action."

Special team investigates political pressure and fake records

In June, the initial investigating team dropped the attempt-to-murder charges after video evidence proved the protesters carried no weapons. Following the formation of the UDF government, the Home Department set up an SIT on 3 August 2026 to uncover the full truth. Meanwhile, the KSU has submitted an official complaint to State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar, demanding legal action against former minister Veena George for fabricating false accusations against student activists.
