Thiruvananthapuram: VD Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition in Kerala and senior Indian National Congress leader, has written to Rathan U Kelkar alleging violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the announcement of the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026.

Allegations of MCC violation over government advertisements

In his letter, Satheesan claimed that government hoardings and advertisements promoting the achievements and welfare schemes of the ruling LDF continue to be displayed across various parts of the state.

He specifically pointed out that such promotional materials remain visible on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and in public spaces, despite the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct in Kerala.

‘Uneven playing field’ concern ahead of Kerala polls

Satheesan stated that the continued display of government publicity creates an uneven electoral playing field and could influence voters, thereby affecting the fairness of the democratic process.

He urged the Election Commission of India to take immediate action to remove all such advertisements and initiate proceedings against those responsible for the alleged violations.

The Congress leader also called for strict monitoring mechanisms to prevent further breaches of the MCC during the election period.

What Model Code of Conduct rules say

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC), issued by the Election Commission of India, comes into force immediately after the election schedule is announced.

It prohibits governments from launching new projects, making policy announcements, or displaying publicity material such as banners, posters and advertisements highlighting government achievements during the election period.

Kerala Assembly elections 2026 schedule

The Election Commission of India has announced that the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections 2026 will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.

The tenure of the current 140-member assembly will end on May 23, 2026.

Key political contest in Kerala

The upcoming election is expected to see a three-cornered contest, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) attempting to unseat the incumbent LDF government.

The LDF, led by the CPM, has been in power in Kerala for nearly a decade, making the Kerala elections 2026 a crucial political contest in the state.
