Coimbatore: In a massive relief, the price of tomato has finally come down across the country. The tomato price in the MGR. market in Coimbatore remained at Rs 25 to Rs 30 on Monday.

The recent drop in tomato prices can be attributed to an increase in production. Consumers were caught off guard last month when tomato prices surpassed Rs 120 per kg. Even though the price had dropped in the following weeks, there was still concern with Onam season approaching.

The merchants said the price will decrease further in the coming weeks as production increases.

Meanwhile, the centre faced criticism for imposing a 40 per cent export tax on onions. Farmers in Maharashtra protested against the government's move, claiming that the decision would lead them to lose money due to the high duty on onion exports and lower pricing in the domestic market. As a result, the price of onion, which is currently at Rs 28 per kg, is expected to rise in the coming days.
