Malappuram: A one-year-old boy died Sunday night after accidentally swallowing a small stone while playing outside his home in Malappuram district, hospital officials reported Monday.

The child, identified as Aslam Nooh, was the son of Mahroof and Rumana, residents of the Thekkumuri area in Changaramkulam. According to authorities at a local private hospital, the toddler picked up the stone from the courtyard of his residence on Sunday evening and swallowed it.

Medical staff stated that the object became lodged in the boy's throat, resulting in acute respiratory distress. He was first taken to a medical facility in Changaramkulam before being transferred to a private hospital in Kottakkal for specialised care. Despite these efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that night.

Local police at the Changaramkulam station confirmed they have not registered a formal case. Officials cited the victim’s age and a preliminary investigation that corroborated the cause of death as choking.

The child’s remains were returned to his family, with funeral services scheduled for Monday at a local mosque.
