LSG poll results: AKG Study and Research Centre wards swing to Congress in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) suffered a setback in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation elections, with its candidate IP Binu losing the Kunnukuzhi ward to Congress nominee Mary Pushpam A.
Binu, a member of the CPM Palayam Area Committee, was defeated in a ward of high symbolic importance to the party. Kunnukuzhi ward houses the AKG Study and Research Centre, a key ideological institution of the CPIM.
The CPM also faced defeat in the neighbouring Palayam ward, where the new AKG Centre, which functions as the party’s state committee office, is located. Congress candidate Shirley S emerged victorious in the ward, dealing another blow to the LDF in the state capital.
IP Binu had earlier represented Kunnukuzhi as a corporation councillor and had served as chairman of the Corporation Health Standing Committee.
The winning candidate, Mary Pushpam A, is the current councillor of Kunnukuzhi and has previously served one term as a councillor. She is the state secretary of the Construction Workers Union and the state secretary of the OBC Congress. A former teacher, Mary Pushpam’s victory strengthens the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) presence in key wards of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The results are being closely watched as part of the broader trends in the Kerala local body elections 2025, particularly in politically significant urban wards.
