Teenager steals Rs 98,000 from Kottayam shop, leaves clue for police with lavish spending

Kottayam: Police nabbed a teenager over charges of theft at Queen Mary sanitary shop near SBI bank in Kidangoor. The accused is identified as Chengannur Kallissery native Kiran Shaji (19). As per the case, Kiran had walked into the shop and vanished after stealing Rs 98,000 from the drawer of a table inside the shop. The theft took place around 1.40 pm on Tuesday.
Kiran fell asleep while travelling on a bus and woke up when the bus arrived at Kidangoor. He went to an ATM counter to withdraw money but couldn’t as there was no balance left. He sought money from many people but it wasn’t of much use. During this time, he noticed a sanitary shop owner who stepped out of the shop to hire an autorickshaw. When the owner left the shop, Kiran barged in and took the money from the drawer. After taking the cash, he fled from the spot after catching an autorickshaw.
The accused purchased a new phone worth Rs 67,000 from a shop in Kottayam and roamed around in Lulu mall the next day. The police traced the accused using the details collected from the mobile phone shop. The investigation team found that the autorickshaw was headed to Kottayam.
According to reports, Kidangoor police nabbed the accused from Chengannur.
