Palakkad RSS worker Sanjith murder: Supreme Court grants bail to first accused, PFI activist Abdul Salam

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted bail to Abdul Salam, the first accused in the murder case of RSS worker Sanjith in Palakkad. A Bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale granted bail to Abdul Salam.

Senior advocate R. Basant, appearing for Abdul Salam, submitted that the accused had been in custody for four years and 10 months. The examination of eight key witnesses in the case had been completed, including three eyewitnesses, he said.

There are a total of 446 witnesses in the case. Senior advocate R. Basant and advocate P. Vishnu argued that bail should be granted as the trial was likely to take considerable time to conclude.

Standing counsel for the State, Aljo K. Joseph, opposed the bail plea. He urged the court to take into account Abdul Salam’s criminal antecedents.

The Supreme Court, however, granted bail to Abdul Salam.

Sreenivasan murder case: Supreme Court issues notice on Ashraf Moulavi’s bail plea

The Supreme Court has issued notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the bail plea of Popular Front leader Ashraf Moulavi, an accused in the murder of RSS worker A. Sreenivasan in Palakkad.

A Bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath issued notice to the NIA and directed it to file its response within four weeks.

Senior advocate Siddharth Dave and advocate Vishnu P., appearing for Ashraf Moulavi, submitted that there were around 1,000 witnesses in the case and that the trial would take several years to conclude.

The court then sought to know how much time would be required to complete the trial. The Supreme Court will consider the bail plea again after a month.
