Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has initiated measures with a view of rejigging vacancies under various departments as per workload. It is expected that this, in turn, will lead to the creation of more vacancies.

Regarding the reorganisation, the chief secretary has issued an order and new committees are formed. Within three months, the respective committees will have to furnish the report on the same.

According to the order, committees will be chaired by the secretaries of respective departments. The departmental chief, representatives from the finance department and the personnel and administrative reforms department will be part of each committee.

The rejigging is over the recommendations of various reports of the Administrative Reforms Commission and other committees. The impact of IT on employment will be considered for the reorganisation. Likewise, recommendations of committees constituted to study the mitigation of the post-pandemic financial crisis will be taken into account.

It may be noted that earlier too, the government had initiated measures for rejigging, but did not turn fruitful.

11th Pay Revision Commission report shows that there are 5.21 lakh state government employees. Among them, 1.4 lakh employees are in government-aided institutions.

During Oommen Chandy’s regime, the number of excess contract employees was found to be 33,000. Several departments recruited contract employees when they allegedly had more staff than the adequate pool.

During the end of Pinarayi Vijayan's first term, there was a plan to create new vacancies. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, it did not get executed. The government then decided to disband unnecessary sections and shift around 2,000 employees to organisations under local self-governments. But even that did not happen.
