Speeding Mini Cooper crashes into scooter in Kerala’s Ernakulam; 3 dead

Three people, including two young women, were killed after a speeding Mini Cooper car rammed into their scooter on the Nedumbassery airport road in Ernakulam district early on Sunday (October 11).

The deceased have been identified as Ijaz, a native of Karnataka, Gopika from Palakkad and Devika from Wayanad. All three worked at a craft shop in the Thrikkakara area, according to reports.

The accident occurred at around 2 am, when the three were returning towards Athani after having tea at a shop near the airport.

What happened on Nedumbassery airport road?

The three were travelling on a scooter when a Mini Cooper, allegedly travelling at high speed, hit them from behind. The impact killed all three at the scene.

Local residents said the car was moving at high speed. The collision was followed by a verbal altercation between the driver and people who gathered at the scene.

The driver, identified as Suhail Sajeev, was subsequently detained and handed over to the Nedumbassery police.

Police suspect possible substance use

There are suspicions that the driver may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances at the time of the accident. However, this has not been confirmed.

Police said the findings of a medical examination would be needed to establish whether the driver had consumed any intoxicating substance before the crash.

A case has been registered against the driver, who remains in police custody, according to the reports.

The bodies have been moved to government hospitals for further procedures. Gopika's body is being kept at Angamaly Taluk Hospital, while the bodies of Ijaz and Devika are at Aluva Taluk Hospital.
