Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday warned against efforts by vested interests to fuel divisions in society by promoting communal narratives.

In a Facebook post, the CM observed that certain groups propagate the idea that caste stands above humanity, and such regressive notions are finding ground even in Kerala — a state that once threw off the shackles of superstition and casteist practices.

His remarks came on the occasion of the 171st birth anniversary of 20th-century saint and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. Vijayan recalled the Guru as a transformative figure who guided society to unite, seek enlightenment through knowledge and rise beyond barriers of caste and creed.

However, he alleged that “communal forces are, nowadays, attempting to appropriate the legacy of Narayana Guru, who has been a guiding light for the state”.

Quoting from his post, Vijayan noted, "Sree Narayana Guru was a great reformer who always opposed communalism. Guru taught not to divide people, but to unite them. Guru's words and actions were not limited to any one religion or caste. They were for the entire mankind."

The Left leader also emphasised that the Guru was a strong critic of upper-caste hegemony, social evils and caste-based oppression, and that he had taken an unyielding stand against economic exploitation.

He further said the Guru’s life and teachings are particularly relevant at a time when attempts are being made to foster communalism and create rifts in society. According to him, remembering Guru’s struggles and message of unity would empower people to resist such dangers.
