SFI leaders arrested for assaulting UG student at TVM Govt Sanskrit College

Thiruvananthapuram: Three activists of SFI were arrested on Thursday for allegedly assaulting an undergraduate student during the Onam celebration at the Government Sanskrit College, Palayam here.

The arrestees are Naseem (26), a Nemom native, Jithu (26) from Athiyanoor, and Karamana native Sachin (26), all former office bearers of the College Union and SFI unit. Naseem is the 12th accused in a stabbing case at the college.

Meanwhile, police also named seven others in a case registered over assault on a student named Adarsh, the son of a CPM leader and Perumkadavila grama panchayat vice-president S Bindu, at the college premises.

The accused are former students at the college. Nonetheless, students said that the accused SFI leaders were in charge of all events on campus. 

Adarsh was allegedly attacked during the Onam celebration organised by SFI. The accused, led by Naseem, assaulted Adarsh when he refused their call to take part in a competition. Adarsh suffered several injuries, including a broken jaw, and reportedly needed surgery.

Later, Adarsh quit his studies at the college just weeks after he joined the college for the degree programme. His relatives said that the family was now focused on his treatment.
