Thrissur: Security agencies have gone on high alert after a drone was spotted flying over the Viyoor Central Jail campus during the early hours of Friday. A comprehensive probe has been launched to track down the operator and investigate the motive behind the security breach.

According to the police, jail security personnel first noticed the drone hovering over the highly sensitive prison premises multiple times between midnight and 2.00 am. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was also seen flying over the adjacent Fire and Rescue Services Academy and a nearby college campus.

Prison Department officials immediately flagged the breach to the local police, who rushed to the scene and initiated a preliminary inquiry.

High-security zone under watch

The Viyoor Central Jail is classified as a highly sensitive installation, as its high-security wing houses several high-profile inmates, including individuals accused in terrorism-related cases. Because of its strategic threat level, the entire area is strictly designated as a no-fly zone for drones and other remote-controlled aircraft.

Officials at the Viyoor Police Station stated that a formal case will be registered upon the completion of the initial inquiry. While investigators currently suspect the drone may have been operated by local hobbyists attempting to capture footage for social media content, they emphasised that no possibilities are being ruled out.

The State Special Branch, the intelligence wing of the Kerala Police, has also stepped in to gather independent information regarding the mid-night flight.
