A video showing CPM Politburo member A. Vijayaraghavan at a private function attended by a local Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) leader has sparked controversy in Kerala. The clip has drawn criticism on social media and from sections of Left workers.

The video, widely shared online, shows Vijayaraghavan having food at a gathering while Muhammed Shafi Pilassery was singing during the programme.

The issue attracted attention because of earlier political allegations that SDPI support had gone to Left candidates in some constituencies during the 2026 Assembly elections.

SDPI is linked to the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI). While the Centre banned PFI and several associated organisations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, SDPI continues to function as a registered political party.

CPM says context of video was misrepresented

Following criticism over the clip, the CPM's Malappuram district secretariat issued a clarification, saying the video had created a misleading impression.

The party said Vijayaraghavan had attended a housewarming function connected to the family of CPM district committee member Gaffoor.

According to CPM, the video was recorded during an orchestra performance at the event, and Shafi happened to be singing at that time.

The party said Vijayaraghavan was in another hall eating food when the footage was taken and later shared online.

The CPM also accused some media organisations of reporting the issue without checking the full details.

CPM says political motives behind campaign

The party said Vijayaraghavan had consistently maintained a strong stand against religious extremism.

It also alleged that the controversy was part of a politically motivated campaign aimed at targeting party leaders.

Meanwhile, reports said the SDPI state leadership had sought an explanation from Shafi after the video surfaced.
