Thiruvananthapuram: Minister Antony Raju has announced that the introduction of AI-powered cameras to detect traffic violations has led to a significant decrease in road accidents and fatalities across Kerala.

In June 2022, the state recorded 344 road-related deaths. However, this June, there has been a significant reduction, with 140 fewer fatalities reported. Moreover, the number of accidents dropped from 3,714 in June 2022 to 1,278 this June, coinciding with the installation of the cameras. However, the number of injured persons increased to 1,468 last month compared to 1,172 of the previous year. The final agreement with Keltron for the implementation of the project is expected to be signed in July.

The following traffic violation cases have been reported:

  • Driving without a helmet: 7,388 cases
  • Pillion rider without helmet: 30,213 cases
  • Three individuals on two-wheelers: 1,818 cases
  • Drivers without seat belts: 49,775 cases
  • Co-passengers without seat belts: 57,032 cases
  • Mobile usage while driving: 1,846 cases
  • Violations by VIP vehicles: 206 cases

A meeting will be held soon with officials from the National Highway Authority of India, Public Works Department, Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP), and Motor Vehicle Department, to discuss combating the issue of illegal parking.

From August 5 onwards, vehicle owners can file complaints online if they believe fines were issued incorrectly by the cameras. Currently, appeals must be made in person.

Criticism of delays addressed

The Transport Department held a high-level meeting and criticised Keltron for the delayed process of issuing fine notices compared to the cameras' ability to detect violations promptly. While 20.42 lakh violations were identified, only 1.28 lakh challans were issued. Out of those fined, only 1.04 lakh people were informed by post. Minister Antony Raju has directed authorities to expedite the process. The total fines pending payment amount to Rs 7.94 crore, with only Rs 81.78 lakh received so far.

Exemptions and compliance

Electricity, water authority, and fire-fighting vehicles will no longer be fined. Complaints regarding these vehicles will be investigated by the Transport Commissioner. Minister Antony Raju emphasised that all government vehicles, including police, must adhere to traffic rules.
