Thiruvananthapuram: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has written to the Prime Minister, requesting intervention to officially rename the state as “Keralam”. In his letter, he referred to the Kerala Legislative Assembly passing a Bill in June 2024 to change the official name from “Kerala” to “Keralam” in government records. Chandrasekhar also informed that he had sent a copy of the letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, acknowledging the Assembly’s decision.

Chandrasekhar stated that the BJP views the great state, representing its heritage and culture, as best described by the name “Keralam”. In the letter to the Prime Minister, he expressed hope that all political parties would work together to revive and preserve Kerala’s rich traditions.

The letter further noted that a developed and secure Kerala can be created while respecting and protecting the faiths and customs of all religious communities. It also stated that officially adopting the name “Kerala” would help counter attempts by extremist groups seeking to divide the state and demand separate districts based on religion.
