Aggressive Nilgiri Tahr that injured 8 persons may be relocated from Marayur to Eravikulam

Marayur: A recommendation has been sent to the Kerala Chief Wildlife Warden seeking permission for the safe relocation of a lone Nilgiri tahr that has attacked and injured multiple people in the Kanthallur-Palapetty area.

Over the past two months, there have been five incidents in Palapetty where eight persons, including forest watchers, were injured. Two of them are currently in critical condition.

The recommendation was put forward by Munnar warden SV Vinod. If approved, the plan is to capture the Nilgiri tahr and release it in the Rajamala area of Eravikulam National Park, which offers a more suitable climate for the animal.

Tranquilliser darts are not considered the most effective method for capturing the tahr since it is a small animal. Trapping is the preferred approach.

A meeting was conducted at Palapetty Kudi with the participation of the panchayat, forest, and scheduled tribe welfare departments, as well as local residents. During the meeting, it was unanimously decided to recommend the safe capture and relocation of the tahr to a more suitable location. Authorities are optimistic about obtaining permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden soon.
